Chapter 6 from the Welding Handbook, Ninth Edition, Volume 2, “Welding Processes, Part 1,” has been selected by the AWS Product Development Committee as a service to industry professionals. Submerged arc welding (SAW) and its process variation, series submerged arc welding (SAW-S), produce the coalescence of metals by heating them with an arc or arcs between one or more bare metal electrodes and the workpieces. The arc and molten metal are submerged in a blanket of granular fusible flux on the workpiece. Pressure is not used, and filler metal is obtained from the electrode and sometimes from a supplemental source such as a welding rod, flux, or metal granules.
